“We are very far from always knowing our own wishes”
~ Francois de
La Rochefoucauld

trying to say? Describe in writing your
opinion of the quote. How can we be far
away from knowing our own wishes?
Explain your thoughts and reasoning fully. Secondly, write about how having a wish come
true could have a negative affect instead of a positive one. Explain your reasoning and rationale

We are very far from knowing our own wishes is a quote that mean know one knows what they fully want in life. Sometimes you might have an idea of what you want but never you never really know if you are going to change your mind. Like for example if you think you want to be a doctor whenyou young you might change you mind once you get older. Everyone thinks they know what they want to do in life but usually by the time they are juinors or senoirs in high school you change your mind at least once.
ReplyDeleteSometimes people wish for something to happen not thinking of the consequences. for instence if someone wishes that they never had a school then everyone in americawould be uneducated. Thats why some wishes can have a negative outcome.
I agree with your thinking! I especially like your second paragraph. So many kids always say "I hate school, I wish I didn't have to go!" but in reality, we as people need to be educated.

ReplyDelete"We are very far from our own wishes." This is a quote that can mean different things to different people. But, the general meaning that I believe everyone can come to agreement on, is that it means that we are not totally sure of what we truly want.
ReplyDeleteMany times, we are so set on and truly believe we know what we want. We go to explore more into, and realize, that that is not what we truly want. It happens to everybody. This is a common thing to high school students who are going to try to figure out what they want to do with their life. They pick something, do some research, and realize that is not what they want.
I think everyone does go through this, including myself. From the time I was young I have changed my mind so many times on what I want to do when I grow up. Even now, that I am going to cosmetology school, I am not one hundred percent sure that that is what I want to do with the rest of my life. There is so much time left, and in that time, I am sure I am going to change my mind multiple times. But that is okay, after all, "we are very far from knowing our own wishes."
Also, we all wish for things. But, how do you know you truly want that? What if you think you do, and it comes true? More then half the time I believe that people do not truly mean what they wish for. The little things that cause some annoyance, are usually things we all need to do and learn to be civilized human beings. We may wish for a million dollars, and you win it, and then you change into an awful, greedy person. You never know.
I agree with you 100%. Everybody has wishes as their growing up but they change so often that it makes us wonder what we really do want in life. We all wish things that may change our lives at that time but it's nothing that is eternal. A million dollars will only last for a little bit. Then what...
DeleteThe quote "We are very far from knowing our own wishes" means to me that you do not know everything you want right now. You may not know what you want until you have it. If you wish for 2 kids, a great husband, and to live in Utah as soon as you get married then thats your wish as of right now. Now, when you are married you might still be New Jersey because you want to be here. You won't know your wishes until you have it, really soak it in and realize that this is the life that you really having been wishing for your whole life. There are people in high school who say "I am never getting married or having kids". Well 6 or 7 years down the road there they are married with their first baby on the way. That was his or her wish back then. Wishes can even change within a couple seconds. You may want turkey and now you want ham. Wishes can change, no matter what happens in life. Even when I was younger I said I wanted to be a teacher and work with 3rd and 4th graders, then a wedding planner, and now I want to own my own day care. I want that wish to come true, but you never know. Wishes can change fast and you may not even know until it hits you. So that is what I think the quote "we are very far away from knowing our own wishes" means by Francois de La Rochefoucauld.
ReplyDeleteI think what Francois de La Rochefoucauld meant when he said “we are very far from always knowing our own wishes” is that you don’t always know what it is you really want. We just think we want them when we actually want something completely different. Example: short story named the monkey’s paw. In it a family gets three wishes from an old stuffed monkey’s paw. The father’s first wish is for three hundred pounds; the following day, his son dies at the factory and the company gives them three hundred pounds as compensation. His second wish is for his son to come back. He and his wife hear a pounding at the door in the middle of the night. The wife wants to go greet her son. Her husband tells her that whatever that is, it’s not their son. She goes to the door anyways overjoyed at the thought of seeing her son. So he makes his third wish to be for his son to go.
ReplyDeleteYou can end up quite far from your original wish. Most kids dream of being president in their earlier years and end up being building contractors, tycoons, priests, virologists, doctors, and a lot of other careers. I originally wanted to be an astronaut; quickly changed my mind after I heard about the Challenger. Now I all I wish is be the best and settle for nothing less. A little egomaniacal but I just can’t stand the thought of anyone being better than me.

ReplyDeleteI believe the quote "We are very far from always knowing our own wishes" means that we may wish things at the moment, but in the long run we might not want that. We all say things that we don't actually mean. For example, When I get mad I always say I wanna move out or move to a new state. I know if I actually did do that I wouldn't be able to handle it. Wishes can either go two different ways. A lot of wishes we make are just a way of venting when we're mad or upset about things. Another way is wishing for things in a joking matter. Like when someone says "I really wish I had a million dollars" we all wish for that but it's not going to be a realistic wish.
ReplyDeleteA lot of wishes can have a negative affect and you may not realize it. You may wish to be rich forever and think money is all you will ever need, but say you did end up being rich and having endless money you might use that money for things that aren't good for you. Also you may loose a lot of real friends and family because you will be so caught up in spending money and soon become extremely selfish and change your whole personality. It may sound silly now, but if you really think about it, a lot of people tend to forget about the people in their life when they have lots of money. Say you don't have endless amounts of it, but you spend it as if you do and then you become broke. All in all, it can turn out bad even though it was something you've always wanted.
This quote above “We are very far from always knowing our own wishes” means a lot. We may always wish for the stuff such as playing a professional sport or being a million air. These things don’t come easy. For most, these things will never come true but you could be that one and a million. I for one wish I could play pro soccer. That has always been my dream. But the chances of that happening are very low. I wish I could play in the MLS major league soccer, for a few years then play overseas in England. Id love for this to happen but it most likely will not. I also wish I could win the lottery. People may this is a quick fix because you can buy whatever you want but that’s not case. You may have a lot of money and nice things but all that money means nothing once it’s all gone and you can’t pay for anything anymore. Doesn’t everyone wish they could win but there is a lot of people that pay out there, the chances are slim to none.
ReplyDeleteYou are only as strong as you perceive yourself to be. You can accomplish anything you put your mind too crubby. I have faith in you.
DeleteThe quote above can mean a variety of different things. Everyone interprets them differently. What i believe it means is that, we never know what exactly what we are wishing for and how it will affect us later. The wishes i have are too complex for the the average mind to handle. Wishes of presidency among other things. Going back to the quote, what would my responsibilities be as president? How would i be able to handle the pressure? Things you can ask yourself also. Will my wishes come true? Thats for me to determine. It is all up to me. For everyone else reading this, how far will you go to accomplish your dreams? What do they mean to you? Only the strongest mentally will be able to do the things they wish. How mentally strong are you? Its survival of the fittest in this crazy world.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means we wish for so much but, truly want less than what we wish for. We take wishes for granted now at days. Wishes are so crazy ,and so unreal sometimes I wish they were real. Sometimes I don't...but, I feel that everyone has their one wish that comes true. Sometimes wishes may be bizarre ,and wishes may turn into dreams who will achieve them? Crazy consequences may occur to. That's why they say be careful of what you wish for. What does that really mean though? Well if you wish for something bizarre sometimes just sometimes it may really come true and you will regret it. Maybe though you might get lucky and that wish will turn from bad to good. If you actually make good wishes they might come true also. I believe in stuff like that. I don't understand how it happens but, I believe in it. Like I wish that one day I will have a family now that is a more reality wish because it is bound to happen most likely. I also wish for more reality stuff realted type things and I hope most come true. I am thankful for the wishes I have today that came true. So like this quote wishes can affect people and things in big ways. Wishes may also be spiritual.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever wish for something, and change your mind a month or two later? well I sure have. Francois de La Rochefoucauld's quote "we are very far from knowing our own wishes" says it all.I change my mind almost everyday. wheather it's about a career or even a life changing decision, we never really know how its all going to turn out in the end.
ReplyDeleteI've made many wishes, had many hopes, and dreams but they were constantly changing as I continued to grow up.I guess you could say I began to see life differently. For example I always believed that I would one day be a singer. That was until I realized it would be to difficult to get to where i wanted to be and of course I changed my mind.Never did I actually think that becoming a teacher was what I am now aiming for in my life today. So what I'm trying to say is that it's ok to make a goal or a dream and change it because life is made of our dreams, it just takes time to figure out where you belong.
I agree with Brittany. I often change wishes. I agree with the way people can change their wishes in a month or carers.
