“We are very far from always knowing our own wishes”

~ Francois de La Rochefoucauld

Read the quote above and think about what the author is trying to say?  Describe in writing your opinion of the quote.  How can we be far away from knowing our own wishes?  Explain your thoughts and reasoning fully.  Secondly, write about how having a wish come true could have a negative affect instead of a positive one.  Explain your reasoning and rationale fully.  Respond in 250 words by Thursday the 27th and reply to a classmates original post by Sunday the 30th.

  1. In my opinion the author is trying to say that we havent lived life to the fullest yet, and we dont know what we truely want in life. I feel I dont even know what I really want in life, I know things will change, and ill change my mind a million more times before I get to where really want to be in life. Sometimes our fears hold us back from doing the things we want. Having a wish come true may have neggative affect, it can turn out diffrently then what you wanted.

  2. In my opinion, the quote “we are very far from always knowing our own wishes,” by Francois de la Rochefoucauld, is talking about how we have wishes everyone does, we will always have wishes that we can only make happen. Don’t stop believing in what you want you need to show everyone that you can do anything you set your heart to. When I read this quote it make me think of we can’t waste each day sitting around doing nothing we have to let our dreams out and show everyone we aren’t just teens. We are teens with voices that can make a difference. We all have wishes and all though they may be big or small we all can achieve our goals and wishes. This quote shows me that ever wish no matter how small it is can come true we just have to let it shine and never give up.
The quote also calls out to me because one of my life long wish is to make a homeless shelter that gives homeless people a whole new start a fresh new day always can come. This homeless shelter will let you learn what you need to get back on your feet like jobs, family, and get a home. This wish is big but since I was 7 I always wanted to do it. I believe this wish will happen no matter what I will reach for the stars and achieve my wishes and goals. This quote is very inspirational and can teach anyone a lesson as long as you understand it.

  3. In my opinion I think that the author of the quote "We are very far from always knowing our own wishes" is trying to tell us that we do not yet know all of the things that we want in life. We may have wishes when we are younger, or as we grow older but they are always changing and are not always achieved. For example, when I was younger I wanted to be a princess. My grandmother basically raised me and all we ever did was play dress up, have tea parties, and do normal girly things. But as I grew older I realized that it is not very realistic to be a princess, and that it was never going to happen so I found a new wish.
I think that as a little kid if your dreams and wishes came true it would be a negative thing. I think that it would show that everything in life came easy, there would be nothing to fight for, and once all of their wishes came true they would have nothing left. If you gave a little kid everything that they ever wished for, what wishes and dreams would keep them going through life? None. They wouldn't have any because everything was just handed to them through life.

    2. I love how in depth you got bry, you truely analyzed the quote to the max. I totally agree with your opinion. I love how you had tea parties with Granny, no one would have one with me so I had to use stuffed animals.

    3. I agree Bryanna! We don't know what we want in life yet! We are too young and even when we are older we will still be too young to know what we want!

  4. The quote "We are very far from always knowing our own wishes" by Francois de La Rochefoucauld means to me to that we have not lived our life yet. We have wishes, hopes, and dreams for the moment but when it comes to thinking about our wishes for when we are eighty years old, it isn't so easy. You really can't sit there and say you know everything you want to do when your eighty years old. It's much harder than thinking about tomorrow or next week. I feel this is because we are not old enough to know what real life is like yet, let alone, make accusations about how we will live when we are dirt old. Making wishes without thinking thoroughly about the situation can end badly. For instance, my cat died last march. He was the coolest cat ever. My family was all upset about the cat dying so my sister found us a kitten we could rescue. This kitten was super sick and needed a lot of help but with love could easily be healed, so we took him. Cutest kitten ever! Then, a couple months later, he was the nastiest cat ever! You can't get too close to him or he tries to bite you, he attacks my puppy, and he runs away on a daily basis. That was a really nice wish that my whole family had, that turned out really bad, very fast. In conclusion, be careful what you wish for, not all wishes will turn out positive.

    1. I totally agree, we don't always know what to expect at this age. We may think we do, but we really have no clue what life is really about yet. and P.S i'm sorry about your cat that passed away :(

    2. I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. You don't always get what you bargined for when it comes to any decision. You were just trying to relive some happy times you had with youe old cat by helping this new one. Sorry it didn't work out so well though better luck next time I hope.

  6. I think the quote “We are very far from always knowing our own wishes “ by Francois de La Rochefoucauld is trying to tell us that we haven’t lived our life to the fullest and at this age we aren’t really sure what we want. Sometimes circumstance or fear can change our dreams. It can also mean that there are a lot of steps to be taken in order to fulfill your dreams.
We can be far away from our own wishes by being confused about what we really want out of life. It’s possible that some people have no time left because of their busy schedules to really think about what their dreams might be. They can't spend quiet times to plan their goals and reflect on their future. If our wishes came true all the time, it can have a negative effect on us. It can make us less passionate about achieving our goals. When we work hard toward our dreams we can appreciate the time and effort that we put into it.

    1. I agree at what what you say. That wishes are some tricky things. That they all can't be good. It is good to work for something and your wish finally comes true.

    2. I agree with you completely. i feel its important to really think about what you want in life, to go after it and to apperciate what you have accomplish. Soon enough thinks will fall in to place, and you'll fulfill things you never thought were possible.

  7. My view on the quote "We are very far from always knowing are own wishes" means we are to young or inexperienced to know what we want or really need. Just becuase something sounds good now doesn't mean It's what you want later on. You have to wait and mature a bit before making any rash decisions but even then you may not know. If I were to make a wish that would come true I would wish for money. I know it's selfish and I don't deserve it but who wouldn't want to have something extra in their pockets. With enough money I could pay for college, get a car, or think about others and donate it to good charity. The only problem is how I get the money, just because I wished for it doesn't mean their could be repercushions. Money doesn't pop out of thin air it's, I could have got it from a winning lottery ticket, earned the money, stole it from someone, or I could have been given fake money after all I didn't specify if it was real or not. I could end up ruining my life by pinning all my hopes on my wealth and become bankrupt. Just because you wish for something doesn't mean it will turn out the way you think. Thats why you my not know whats best for you now but in the future you will come to realize your real values. This is the reasoning of Francois de La Rochefoucauld and his quote.

  8. The quote "We are very far from always knowing our own wishes" by Francois de La Rochefoucauld, deals with everyone's lives. In my opinion the author is trying to say that our wishes always change. Things happen in our lives which make us wish things differently. And life doesn't stop just so we can get that one wish out of the way. I'm only 16 and I have a ton of more wishes that I'll probably think of in my life time. The different times in our lives make us who we are today. But a wish's outcome may not always be a positive one. It may sound good in your head but in reality it will change everything. One little change to your life and everything will not be the same as it used to be. For example, when I was little I always wished my dad would move back in with us. I was jealous of other kids because I didn't really have that "father figure" like they did. As I grew up I realized something. If that wish had come true my life would've been completely different. I would have grown up in a totally different way that I did. I liked my life growing up. I lived a very good life in my opinion. I had people who loved me and took care of me. Now a days, I see my dad a lot more which I'm very happy about. But living with him when I was younger would have changed the sequences in my life, and I don't know if I would've liked that outcome as much as I like the outcome of my reality.

  9. The quote means that are wishes are closer then we think. That with enough looking, we can find what we want or need in life. I think most of us have a wish that is about to happen and do not know about it. One wish that I could have that could go wrong would be,Finding out who one at some show and aspect someone else to win. But that person has lost and someone else won.

  11. The quote "We are very far from always knowing our own wishes" by Francois de La Rochefoucauld is basically saying that we may believe we know our true dreams, but we will always have to work hard to accomplish them. Dreams are something we need to work for, or not get close to acheiving. We also need to remember that our minds are constantly changing. In life we need to sort out what we truly want, versus what we truly need. Everyone is always going to be far from knowing what the wishes are because everyone wants stuff that they choose to wish for, without realizing how idiotic it is. To have all your wishes come true would be unreasonable, thus the author is trying to explain it. A lot of wishes people make would drastically change their lives had they come true. For example, I always wished my parents wouldn't have gotten a divorce and that my dad would have stayed around. Now that I see my life in comparison to his, I'm happy we aren't quite as close as we should be. That is just a single example of a wish a person may make that would truthfully end bad. Young kids wish to be president, but how many of them could handle the stress? Mainly none of them, so if thoes would be wishes to come true the entire nation would be jepordized. Francois de La Rochefoucauld was clearly correct in saying this brilliant quote.

  12. ”we are very far from always knowing our own wishes”. What I believe the author is trying to say is that you never really know what you want. People make choices every day and most of the time there are for the worst. We usually make a decision and regret what we do. I believe that is what the author is trying to say. You never know what you want. We can be very far from our wishes for example. Say all your life you wanted to be a police officer and you never wanted to do it because you never wanted to do the training, or you found something else first. That’s how people are far from their wishes.
If your wish came true it doesn’t always have a positive effect. Some time people make a wish out of spite and because of karma it comes back you haut them. Plus they really don’t mean it and was irrelevant to what they meant. This goes to show that people have minds of their own because most people cant make their mind. We could be so close to a wish but yet so far away from it that you never get to see it come true. Also never have one come true because it will have a negative effect on that person in the long run because of karma. My advice is if your going to make a wish, make sure you hope for the best but expect the worst.

  13. A quote like this is sure to keep you on your feet throughout life. Expectations can fuel or hope, but if we are let down, we are drained of hopeful emotions. We are told to dream big, but people don't realize that we need to pick ourselves up from the bad times, and move on. You've got to support yourself. Take action in what you want. And if you succeed, then your dream is redeemed and you feel enlightened. But if the end result is not what you want, you've still got to keep your head up. It's the best method of reaching the knowledge in your wish. We are far because we are always moving forward to find or complete what we want. Never give up on that wish. Keep yourself standing, even if the surprising explosion of contradictory strikes away your expectation.

But suppose your outcome does follow through with your dream. Like if you wished that a presidential candidate would not win in their election. They don't win, and your dream comes true. The candidate you actually wanted to win is in office. He takes good care of what's needed in the first month, but eventually your nation falls apart. Maybe this new president couldn't make the choices you expected him to make. And now you feel so bad about yourself. The outcome is what you wanted, but not what you expected.

  14. “We are very far from always knowing our own wishes”

    ~ Francois de La Rochefoucauld
“We are very far from always knowing our own wishes”. I believe what Francois de La Rochefoucauld is trying to say that you never truly know what your wishes are, wishes change just like your mind does. We can be far from knowing our wishes because we may not want to have kids when you are young but when you are older you may wish to have children. As someone gets older their wishes are going to change. The wishes may get smaller and instead of wanting to be the president, maybe you would want to work in the White House. The wishes may get bigger, instead of having 1 kid you may want a big family. Wishes can effect you negatively and positively. You may wish to be a doctor but can not achieve that goal, you may than give up on yourself and not believe in yourself anymore. A wish can positively effect someone. Because if you truly wish to do something with your life and be successful and end up where you would like to be, than you can look back and think my wishes came true, and be glad you never gave up. I don't think that every wish you wish will come true, but if you really wish something and give it your all than I believe something good will come out of it!

  15. In my opinion, the quote says to me that you dont always know what you want to wish for or want. In life you have to make many desissions but you always wish to have something like a fast car, or a better paying job, I think that the quote says we are far from really knowing what we want. I want many things but In real life, but I dont know what I really want. We can be far from knowing our wishes by thinking what we really want but in reality its nothing of what you really wanted. Secondly, if you do wish for something it will most certainly turn 180 degrees. For example i wanted a new car, next day i find a brand new 2013 Dodge Charger in my drive way, only to know that i was to be arrested for the police thinking i stole the car when it was the guy across the street. Or, to say "I wish I didnt have to go to school today", in reality your going to get the flu and miss school for 2 weeks and miss homework that you have to do in 2 days. There are many different ways a wish can go wrong, just like in the story "The Monkeys Paw". To go back to the quote for a second, "We are very far from always knowing our own wishes", our wishes are far from what we think they are. that is in my opinion.

  16. I think the quote “we are far from knowing our own wishes” means that we will never know our wishes because they are always changing. Every year, month, day, even hour our dreams and wishes change. Our wishes change by our mood and by events that occur in our life. If our wishes were always the same and never changed our lives would get very boring! If you’re mad you then have bad thoughts and wishes like wanting someone out of your life. Could you imagine if that really came true? That would be awful. Sometimes as teenagers we just wish everyone would disappear but if they really did we would be heartbroken and miss everyone.

  17. I believe that Francois de La Rochefoucauld was trying to say that we can't really know what we want because, as humans, a lot of the time we aren't satisfied in a great deal of our decisions. I myself often wonder "what if I had done that instead of that?" even a long time after whatever I'm thinking about happened. It's just human nature to think the grass is greener on the other side, or at least I think so, which means sometimes you can't really be sure in your wishes.
A wish of mine when I was younger was to have a house full of dogs. I was one dog-crazy little girl after all, but I don't think that aspect has changed much as I've grown. It's cute when I think of it, but at the moment I live with six dogs (two of which are really mine and my mom's while the other four are my roommate's) and while I get six times the love, it's a little crazy at my house with all the barking, feeding times, and walks. It's not an extremely negative effect on me, but I know two dogs would be enough for me when I get my own house, with three pushing it!

  18. A quote is strange. A quote can become a guideline, a talking point between friends and family, or something to refer to when the occasion is appropriate. But that doesn't necessarily make them true. Especially one like this. I strongly disagree with this quote. I think people know exactly what they want. Some might not know what they need. We as humans, are a very materialistic species of apes. We WANT things. This is because things are convienent. They are helpful. I know what my wishes are, and I can tell you my first 3 let alone 5 aren't for inner happiness and what I might "need".

We live in a world full of trite, trite sayings. "I can make a quote too!" kind of thing. People who are nowhere close to being intellectual or deep can make quotes, look at some of the artists in industry today. Most of the lyrics in songs on the radio are trivial! What I'm trying to say is think for yourself before you go let an obsurd, non-sensical quote direct your actions and outlook on things.

I believe that our actions will always have consequences, some we may not know of or understand but we will face. So yes, a wish can have consequences. For example, a wish for fame could have a negative consequence, that being a loss of privacy!

Well to sum it up I think the author of the quote wasn't quite sure of his priorities writing the quote but I think he meant to say that it's hard to understand what someone truly wants.

  19. “We are very far from always knowing our own wishes” This quote is very open in meaning we all have very distorted minds and imagine what we want from life. How we can listen to the news and hear something amazing happened to someone ,but they never tell you what happens to that persons personality. Or how much they changed, or how they really lost it all when they thought that they got it all.. By reading this quote we realized that everything horrible that ever happen, happened for a reason weather or not you like it. For example, I wish I was a millionaire , but then I look at celebrities and how most of them had bad experiences with there money.
