Period 3 Blog 1 9/17

Although Andy was a gang member, he still had definite dreams for his future.  He planned to marry Laura, "get out of the neighborhood" and have a lot of kids.  His dreams, of course, would never be realized due to his tragic death.

* What are your dreams for the future?  How do you plan to make them come true?  What might some "obstacles" be in your life?

Your initial response is due Thursday the 20th and a second post in reply to one of your classmates initial posts is due Sunday the 23rd.  Your response should be a MINIMUM of 250 words.

  1. After reading this short story about Andy the gang member it really made me think about my future. One dream I have for myself is to graduate high school and move on to college. I don’t really care about where I go to school they all give you the same education. I plan on becoming a cop one day. I want to live in a normal size house with woods in the backyard so I can still take my golf cart out. I want to have a second house in Lake Placid New York so I can go up there and go snowboarding. These dreams are going to take a lot of work. I’m going have to work really hard the rest of my high school career to move on the collage. Once I get into college I’m going to apply to the police academy and hopefully I get in.
Some obstacles that have set me back were my dad dying when I was in 7th grade. After that I just didn’t want to do anything. I didn’t want to go to school anymore or anything. But I fought my way around that. I know that he would want to me to have all the things I want. Another thing that may set be back is breaking my collar bone twice. This stopped me from doing a lot of physical activities that I will need to do to get into the police academy. Such as I can’t really do pushups and stuff like that but I will work out and fight thought it.

    1. Being a police officer is an awesome carrer. It is wonderful how you want to do that. New York is beautiful. Loosing your father must have been awful. I can not imagine what it is like to loose your father. It's wonderful that you pulled through that though. A lot of people just spiral downward and never come back after experiencing things like that, especially at that age. But, after that tragedy and breaking your collarbone twice, and still wanting to join law inforcement and not letting things keep you down shows how strong you are and should be proof to you that you can do anything you set your mind to.

    2. how does a death deter one from their goal?

    3. These corey are some great goals. i think you can do them all. Your on the same lines as me we both want to get into the police academy. & Snowboarding is just plain out <3 i think this stood out the most cuz we got things in common

  2. We all have dreams about doing many different things. They can be about anything. My dreams are to go to college to obtain my doctoral degree in psychiatry, and to become an Industrial organizational psychologist. This dream may seem far fetched for a student who barely has the grades to graduate public high school, although i am determined. Some obstacles i expect to have are mainly my peers and parents saying that i cannot pursue my dreams. This will be hard because i am extremely self conscious. I know for a fact i will persevere. To make my dreams come true i plan to work very hard, nothing comes without hard work. Another obstacle will be my criminal record, but besides that getting into college will be difficult because on my resume for my job i would like a very good school. My grades need to pick up. I also have to stop taking everything for granted because when i do that, essentially i am not gaining the knowledge or experience i should. After many years of college which will be very difficult, finding the job will be a whole other battle. Currently there is only 1,200 people employed in this position. If you were wondering why i even want to waste my time by spending many years in college and wasting money, it is because all of that "wasted time" will be making me over 130,000 dollars annually. After all of my hardships i would love to settle down and have some kids with a gorgeous wife.

    1. Sean you come up with some weird things but i think you can pull it off good luck.

    2. it is unlikely that you will succeed in your dreams. colleges normally only accept students with high grades, honor and high honor roll being what is the norm for your competition.

      Delete
    3. and as an afterthought any criminal records are a major deterrent to any and all colleges. in short it will only encourage them to decline your application.

  4. I am currently in Vocational school for Cosmetology. I want to go even further with it then just high school. I either want to do that, and go to college for business and cosmetology, or do something else to help people. My family is really big on the military so that is always an option. If I were to join it would be as a linguist or human resorces. I have had the military in mind as what I would do up until I found out about cosmetology. I am going to try to get that to work. Hopefully I can do that, and go father and farther and one day open my own business.
Opening your own business is extreamly difficult. It will cost a lot of money to start a business. Plus the money you'll owe for college. It will not be easy, but it will be worth it. Hiring people and getting the name of the company out there will be difficult too. But hopefully with hard work, it will be possible and successful.
Along with that, I want to have a beautiful small house in New Hampshere. Hopefully marry a wonderful person and settle down, and be able to live comfortablely.

  5. For my future, I want to graduate high school and go to a successful college and become a great chef. I have always wanted to open my own restaurant and cook all types of different foods. I have been cooking since I was a child. My dad taught me how to cook any things and I loved learning. I think its an amazing feeling to experiment with different foods and spices, and I want to be able to cook food for my family. I also love children and I cant wait to have some of my own. For a long time now I have had dreams of running a daycare center for kids. As a teenager I see how kids now a days get treated and I want to be able to show them that they're important and that there are nice people out in the world. I like having fun and making people laugh. Their could be many different bumps in the road on the way to my future that can affect how my future turns out. If my grades don't go well I could have to change my future, or if I get a serious sickness that could also affect my life. I hope my future goes the way I have planned and have been planning.

    1. wow! thats really cool how you want to be a chef and work with kids. I believe that you can do both. i know it will probably be really hard, and will be a lot of work but thats life right? i believe that you can do it. I'm sure that you will be very successful at what you do. so keep up with everything and stay focussed so that your dreams of becoming a chef and owning a childcare will come true.

  6. My dream for my future is to got to college and become a English teacher for handicap kids. When I graduate high school I'm going to get a job and save up for more schooling. Some obstacles I'm going to have is staying focus during school and keeping on with all the work in college. My other dream is to stop the cycle of drugs and alcohol in my family. I want to make something of my life and nothing can stop me.

  8. Reading this story made me think about how short life really is. To never being able to know when your life is going to end, or how its going to end and so forth. You just know that you want to make the best of what you have, not what you don't have. WHich is why i intend to graduate highschool and go to collage to become either an art teacher or a 1st or 2nd grade teacher.I'm not going to lie i did imagine myself becoming one but i was more set on being a singer, dancer or even an actress. But who hasn't? I know I'll struggle with a lot of things to get to where i want to be, but i'll also be learning from my mistakes. For example i'll most likely be struggling with all the work and the money that has to be put into making my dream come true. But it will be worth it in the end. I know this may sound courney to some of you that are reading this, but i believe that dreams do come true. You just have to keep fighting for what you want. Thats just what i'm going to do. In the future I hope to have acomplished my dream and maybe have a family of my own,but only time will tell.

    1. I honestly agree that dreams do come true, but nobody else is going to make your dreams come true but you. I think if you really believe in something then you should do everything in your power to make it happen. This story also made me realize that i should start planning for the future now, becuase were getting close to being seniors. And of course everyone is going to have stuggles later in life but we have to learn to push through them and keep fighting for what we believe in.

    2. Out of all the essays I read yours really stuck out to me. I love how you are going to work hard for what you want and know that it won't come easy. That is just how life is. Nothing falls into someones hands unless they work for it. Saying that dreams do come true is 100% true. You can make anything happen! I hope your dreams do come true and your life is everything you intend it to be!

  9. @ Brittany, thats a great goal, don't loose sight of what you want. It was definitely hard paying for school and the workload was tough at times but in the end it is all worth it!!!

  10. Everybody has those few "goals" they want to reach in their future. Whether it is becoming a famous actor or actress, or having 5 kids. Whatever it is, we all want to reach our goal. As cliché as this sounds my goal for the future is to be happy. Not that I am not happy right now, because I am, but I want to stay happy forever. I want to do something in my life that I am happy doing. I always said I would rather be very content and have a job that pays less money, than making a lot of money and not being happy. When I think about my life in the future I think about living a life with no regrets. Not only do I want to be happy in the future but I want someone to share my life and happiness with. By that, I mean getting married. I want to have a loyal, perfect husband to grow old with. Seeing elders with their husbands/wives and seeing them madly in love still just makes me want that even more. Another goal I have is I want to go to, and graduate college. I am going to be the first person in my immediate family to go to a college. Although school can be very stressfull and tiring, I know I will be able to finish it and get a degree. Me going to college will definitely make me very proud of myself. College is a big chapter in your life and I for sure want to add it to my book. Basically being happy, being in love, and finishing college are my main goals I would love to fulfill.

  11. I had made goals for where I want to be in life by the time I was fourteen. They are as follows: marry by the age of thirty and be in one of the higher economic classes by the age of 40. The means by which I intend to meet these goals I care very little to. As an accountant, in a corporation, private business venture, I couldn’t care less what it is; I only care where it gets me. It helps that I have very few ethics in comparison to others. I am ineligible for the military so it is unlikely; death rates are too high for my liking anyways. A world leader/ politician would be a last choice as attempted assassinations on me would almost certainly be common. I also have a particular disgust and hatred toward politicians and politics. But I would get the opportunity to shape the world as I see fit.
The obstacles standing in my path are those I made for myself. There is the amount of time I set for myself get there. There’s also the problem finding a girl who’s crazy enough to marry me; Most can only bear to be around me for a few hours at a time. Finding the economical niche is the major one high pay, fair benefits; low probability of death or injury is a high ranking factor. If one does open I will seize the opportunity and from there it will be easy. John Rockefeller foresaw how important petroleum would become and became rich because of it. Maybe I will do the same later on in life.

  12. I have many big dreams for my future. First off i want to go to college and get my masters. After I get my master I want to get a steady job. Before I get married or anything i want to make sure that the career that I have will be enough to support me and my family. Some obstacles that i will face is saving enough money for school and for the future. My plan is to go to OCC first to save some money then after two years of OCC I going to try to switch to Kean. I want my career to be a history teacher so I might even try to get into georgian court. Colleges are very expensive these days so that is one obsticle that i am worried about facing is paying for college. College is the main focus of my future because I know if I don't go to college and finish college i will not be able to support a family in the future. I also know that its going to be hard for me to go to college because school is not my favorite thing.

Colleges are very expensive but it will all be worth it in the end if you succeed and have all your dreams set and ready to go. And im really hopeing that college will be better for me and I am hopeing the same for you too. Good luck!!

  13. To begin with i have many big dreams for my future. I wanted to be a Professional nfl football player. Then i looked forward and realized it wouldnt work out. Therefore i went on to thinking. So now my dream is to become a cop. Somthing along those lines as in meaning law enforcement. With that being said How do you plan to make them come true? Honeslty you just gotta think positive & have determation...DREAM BIG! In conclusion Some "obsticals" that might come along the way with achieving my goals Can be simple things as Getting into the law program, Police acidameny or even things as far as Ur grades Can effect you. All in all though i dont think i will have as much obsticals as others would have because honestly is all about being determined and having your mind set to what you want to do and nothing it stoping you. Remeber also its very important to have a back up plan if that doesn't go your way

  14. What are my dreams that you may ask? I tend to finish school. I am planning on going into the Navy for five to ten years and I also plan on getting my experience and hopefully my certification for underwater welding. later in my early thirties im probably going to get a job for underwater welding. the reason why I say probably because of all the economical issues and people not getting jobs. if I succeed with that my mid or late thirties, i'll open a business for anything that pretty much needs welding on, off and so forth. during my thirties I will eventually congregate time so that I can ride my Trx 450 when im not busy on what I already have to do. I strive to fix things and add a zing to it so its special. My "obstacles" in life to succeed what I want to succeed, to find out how to get over them. I tend to be more occupied, attached to my work then anything else, because if you love your job you'll always be satisfied in what you achieved in life. doing high quality work can be difficult in some points, but the more time, effort, and work you put into it the happier you'll make customers, and the more experience you'll put in for yourself. I try to aim for things not a lot of people do so it's kind of original. when I work I tend to be that guy that always wants to get things done not take a longer period of time then what its supposed to take.

  15. Honestly...I do not know what I want to be when I graduate high school. It's scary knowing this big cold world is going to be left for us. I tend to think about a million shattered dreams I've had. The way I am heading is not the best. I plan on becoming a Navy Seal. I will work and fight the hardest I can just to acheive being in that branch. Like I said not the best choice but, with the way I'm going it's best for me. I am inspired by the men and women who sacrifice their lives for us today. I think we don't pay as much tribute to them as we should. With that being said I really am serious about taking up the Navy. After I commit 10 years to the Navy if I make it back I want to go to college. I want to study up law. I want to become a lawyer. I want to find a wife. She doesn't have to be the most perfect, beautifulest woman in this world. Just someone I can open up to. Someone who understands me. I want to have a family. I dream about that almost every night. I can't wait for the day I come home ,and my son/daughter yells daddy's home and runs in my arms. Unfortunately I might not live to see that day. Obstacles would be fighting to live stronger another day. Fighting closer to my dreams. Fighting closer for my family, and friends. I want to go out in a bash. I just can't seem to get my head off of my future. I just hope when it comes I am ready. You know people ask everyday to some other individual what do you want to be when you're older. Most are confused, some know what they want. Some are fortunate to get what they want ,and some just die trying. So rather me give up and not try for my dreams...I'd rather fight day by day, night by night to acheive them.

  16. After reading this story a lot of people may have thought more about life and how short it acutally is. It is short and you do not want to waste your life in jail or working in an office everyday for the rest of your life when you rather be working on cars and truck. You don't have to go out and party every weekend and drink because it's "cool" and all your friends do it. You can be different. For me, I want to finish high school with honoral, then go to OCC for my regular math and english classes, and then go to college for child development and child care. I have no doubt that I want to work with kids and infants for my career. I love being able to watch them grow up and watch them be come who they are. They are filled with life and joy. I was going to vocational school for medical careers just waiting to get into child care and they told me I cant do into child care this year because my grades aren't high enough. I was defantly bummed because I really will use that information for my life. I really am hoping that they change their minds and let me go into child development within the next couple days. Me not being able to get into vocational school is a tiny obstale in the road, but I will defantly be able to go around it and proceed to my future. If there is enough work in New Hampshire I am hoping to move to there after I finish college and get married. I want to have my own day care up there along with my own family.

  17. Well to start off I have a few dreams that id wish to succeed in. The fist one is to be a pro bmxer. The second one is to be straight famous, weather its singing or being an actor. It honestly dosent really matter if I dont make it because i already have a future planned out for me. Don't get me wrong tho im deffinatly persuing them thoo. Well trieng atleast. Some obsticals are well fror the bmxing i currently have a broken wrist for about 2 or 3 years now... So that could alwase just give in on me and i wont be able to use it anymore. The singing and or actor thing could not happen by me not trieng to get there. I plan on making these dreams reality by talking to the right people, staying away from the ones who i dont need around, and striding forward. I feel as if i try to my fullest extent i can make it. To be honest my first option if i could choose id pick singing. making music has alwase been a dream of mine, but ill alwase stay riding.

  18. I’d like to do a lot of things in my future. The main thing I’d like to do is graduate high school and get a good job, that makes a lot of money, so I don’t have to struggle. Also I’d like to travel around the world, or go to places that i haven’t been to yet. I want to see a lot of places because everything seems so interesting. Other thing I’d like is to get into computers. Technology and fixing up computers is something I’m interested in. Some obstacles that I’d face would be the time. I’m kind of impatient so finishing high school, then college, then actually get the job seems like a really long time. Therefor i hope in the future everything turns out well. If i continue to do what i want to do, and actually live up to my dreams then maybe one day i’d be where i want to be. Also i have to learn from my mistakes. Doing the wrong thing, and messing up, would get me no where. That’s why i plan to keep my head high, and actually do my best, and complete my dreams.

  19. In the future i wish to many things, to start off i am going to vocational school for auto/diesel mechanics. After that i was thinking about going to UTI for the same and, since i have spent pretty much all of my life on the water i want to go to the marine mechanics branch of UTI. After finishing all of that i want to either work at a marina as a mechanic or possibly start my own business as an auto/marine mechanic. I also want to further my training from open water diver to advanced open water diver and eventually to dive master. Once that is accomplished i might also pursue a career in that or whatever else comes my way. Then possibly buy a summer home on one of the Hawaiian islands or maybe one up in the mountains somewhere i haven't decided yet.

  20. Alright so this story made me think about how fortunate i am, that i dont live in an area where gangs are strong.
something ive always wanted to be is a police officer. im a curently going to VOCS for law and public saftey. this will hopefully give me the edge i need to get to where i want to be in life. i plan on graduating high school and going to ocean county college for a few years and maybe getting a degree in criminal justice. but while im doing this i will take the cival service test. also this is where vocs will come in to play because you get certified to b a class 1 police oficer, i will apply in seaside and surrounding towns for a summer job to get my name out there. hopefully they will put me through the police academy. then someday i wish to tranfer to berkley township polce department. some obsticles could be not getting my class 1 certification done, this would really mess up my plan. also what i do now could really mess up that plan, if i get anything on my record as little as a ticket this could mess me up. when i think of success i think of one quote from the movie the pursuite of happieness. will smith says " You got a dream... You gotta protect it. When People can't do somethin themselves, they will tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin, go get it. Period ".
